Liberation of Dachau

45th Infantry Division Liberation of Dachau

Let Dachau live in our memories”…History of the 157th Infantry Regiment.

Veterans of six campaigns to whom death was commonplace, sickened and vomited at Dachau. Not the sight and smell of death did this, but the decaying evidence of human cruelty that was beyond the understanding of the normal mind.

Dachau - Arbeit Macht Frei

Dachau was rot, and stench, and filth.

Dachau was Hitler and the SS.

And, deny it though its people did with every breath, Dachau was Germany of 1933-45.

On April 29, 1945 elements of the 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division liberated the concentration camp at Dachau; this action reminded all who took part in this historic liberation the reasons for being at war with Germany and left an indelible mark on the men who witnessed the atrocities of life in a concentration camp.
